Abstract
The marked gender influednce on the occurenc eof systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) indicates that genetic and hormonal factors would be important in the etiology of this illness. However, the clinical and pathologic features in male SLE patients
are
not well known.
We studied 21 male lupus nephritis patient who had kidney biopsies between 1979 and 1993 at Seoul national University Hospital retrospectively. The male to female ratio was 1 to 17 to 58 years 9mean 30 years). Malar rash, cral ulcer, arthritis
was
less
frequent clinical manifestations in male lupus nephritis and hypertension, depressed C4 level was more nephrotic syndrome(51%).
The patholotgical findings in male lupus nephrtis showed diffuse prolifeative lesion (WHO Class IV) in 13, membranous lesion (WHO Class V) in 4 patients and its proprition was not different from that of female lupus nephritis. But nephrotic
syndrome was
more frequent in male lupus nephritis with diffuse proliferative lesion than female diffuse proliferative lupus nephritis.
Of the 17 patients whose follow up period was over 3 months, 5 patients died and 1 patient progressed to chronic renal failure.
The actuarial survival rate of these these 17 patients were 67% after 2 years and survival rate of male lupus nephritis was lower than that of female lupus nephritis.
